Software Freedom Day (SFD) is being celebrated at Kathmandu University under the canopy of Kathmandu University Open Source Community (KUOSC) on Saturday, 18th September 2010.
Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a global event to promote and foster Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) being celebrated on 3rd Saturday of every September. It is being coordinated by Software Freedom International globally by providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration; however volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities.
This event used to be celebrated on a central location under the organization of FOSS Nepal community. But this time, the modality of event has changed and it is being celebrated in decentralized modal in various ICT colleges around Nepal. At KU, KUOSC has taken the responsibility of celebrating SFD.
On Friday evening, a candle light vigil will be held behind the library block to mark the eve of SFD. Then on the very day of SFD, a small FOSS orientation session will be held with introduction to FOSS, SFD, and Open Source as a whole. Install Feast, in which our volunteers will help install Ubuntu Linux Operating system on the interested student's computer, will also be the part of the event. CDs of Ubuntu Linux operating system will also be available at the price just enough to reciprocate the cost of CDs. Also balloon release ceremony will also be held to mark the release of balloons as the advent of free software. Also a short training session will also be held to introduce the participants to Ubuntu Linux operating system. In parallel, we will also be screening a short documentary to elucidate the participants and visitors about FOSS and free software.
Also an interesting concept called Open Art ,where all the visitors will paint whatever they like on the same canvas, will also be held. We hope the visitors and participators will be acquainted with the concept of FOSS software learn to admire it and help foster FOSS philosophy. We would like to invite you all at our event Software Freedom Day (SFD) celebration at Kathmandu University,Dhulikhel Kavre.
[ KUOSC is the sister organization of Kathmandu University Computer Club (KUCC) which specializes in advocacy, promotion and development of concepts and software under the FOSS domain. It is one of the integral part of KUCC ]
